Marijuana smoking is down in teenagers around the globe. In the United States 24 percent of teenagers studied admitted to smoking marijuana in 2006. These numbers were down 12 percent from a previous 2002 survey. In Canada the numbers were also down an average of 12 percent. Changes in socialization techniques and the negative health implications of drug and alcohol abuse can be attributed for the decline.

Marijuana use is down. These are the results of a study done on marijuana use in teens around the world. During the 4 year study, researchers tracked the marijuana use of 93,000 teens. The study concluded that marijuana use decreased in most of the countries. The study also showed that the teenagers spent less time “hanging out” with friends face to face. Teens opted to contact friends using other methods.

The results also showed that the teenagers who spent time socializing with their friends in the evening were more likely to smoke marijuana. The researchers speculated that the decrease in face to face socializing was probably based on the fact that teenagers were finding others ways to communicate. The Role of Teen Marijuana Use Research in Reducing Drug Use

Studies into teen marijuana use are providing the conclusive results of the negative health effects needed to the drug abuse.
MRIs show that marijuana smoking damages the developing brain. Heavy pot smokers show damage in specific brain areas that are known to develop in teenage years. The affected region is responsible for memory, attention, language and functioning skills. A study was performed on 14 teenagers at a drug rehab center who had smoked nearly 6 joints day. The MRI’s showed damage to the myelin sheaths that was indicative of a slower messaging to the brain (Manzar Ashtari,et al., “Diffusion abnormalities in adolescents and young adults with a history of heavy cannabis use” Journal of Psychiatric Research, 2009; 43 (3): 189-204).

Implications of the Teen Marijuana Studies

In a 2005 study marijuana smokers showed altered blood flow to the brain. The altered flows were still detected even after a month of the smokers abstaining from marijuana smoking (Ronald I. Herning, et al., “Cerebrovascular perfusion in marijuana users during a month of monitored abstinence.” Neurology 2005 64: 488-493). It is not clear whether brain function will return once the brain is damaged in teenagers.

A National Survey of Drug Use and Health in 2004 showed that girls began smoking marijuana earlier than boys. Besides increased substance abuse, studies also show that more teen girls are absuing tobacco and alcohol.

According to the Department of Health and Human Services, “girls ages 12 to 17 now match boys in illegal drug and alcohol use and have actually surpassed boys in smoking cigarettes and misusing prescription drugs.”

In 2006, the Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP) reported that "1.6 million girls reported having at least one major depressive episode in 2004." The number one drug of choice for girls since 2003? Marijuana, which can bring on symptoms of depression, ranks highest. Prescription pills, diet pills to pain killers also fill out the list of common drugs used among girls.

The increase in substance abuse among young women is especially dangerous because of the more serious health issues associated with female users. The female physiology is substantially different; women tend to develop alcohol-related health problems far faster than young men do, reports the American Medical Association.

These alcohol-related issues can include: brain damage, cancer, cardiac complications as well as mental disorders. Teen girls who drink alcohol regularly will also likely experience a disruption of growth and puberty. I remember that after heavy weekends using cocaine how it made life much harder. I mean, life is hard enough without class ‘A’ drugs isn’t it?? Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday seemed particularly challenging. Monday evenings or Tuesday evenings I usually ended up on the phone to a friend, who didn’t know I used cocaine, moaning about how bad my life was. If only someone had said “listen mate, life’s much easier and much better if you don’t use drugs at the weekends - or mid-week” - but they didn’t and I had to find this out for myself.

Lack of sleep is definitely a torment. After extreme weekend sessions on the ‘Columbian export’ you could often be too wired to sleep. (There’s probably so much rubbish added before the end-user gets the coke that it could be anything in there keeping you awake really). Then there’s the insomnia but with a blocked up knows due to the copious amounts of crap recently shoved up it.

My observations, here in the United Kingdom, are that there are users of cocaine everywhere. The most proliferate users are in the 20s-30s age range. I’ve found that despite moving to several different cities around England I still end up making friends with other users and re-igniting the party lifestyle. Cocaine users come from all parts of society I’ve partied with lawyers and dentists but also there are hundreds of thousands of kids/people doing it from less affluent parts of society. There’s a small town I know where all the young men wear trainers and baseball caps in the 2 bars in the town. These men mostly finished their schooling at 16. The majority of these are cocaine users on a daily basis.

Probably influenced by the glorification of drugs in the media and classic films like Al Pacino’s Scarface and Matt Dillon’s Drugstore Cowboy,there came a point in my life (when I was about 15 years of age) where my curiosity got the better of me and I decided I wanted to try every drug. (Of course famous films continue to glorify films even nowadays with the likes of Cocaine Cowboys and American Gangster hitting the big screen and theatre.
I achieved this ambition by about 21, starting with cannabis and LSD - very cheap in the 1990s. When I was old enough to shuffle past doormen I progressed onto ‘party-drugs’ like amphetamine (speed), and MDMA/MDA (ecstacy). Ecstacy was my favourite. I dabbled with heroin and ketamine before settling on the ubiquitous white powder: cocaine.
My personal experience of cocaine use is a story about overcoming the addictive pull of cocaine. I wouldn’t say I was a ‘hard’ user by any stretch of the imagination. I was probably using everyday or every other day at my peak; sometimes using the toilet cubicles at work to have a morning snort. I cringe at thinking of this nowadays as it seems I had the life of pond-scum. Despite having some warped perception that I was somehow part of the elite and better than everybody else I was actually quite low. The more I did the more I felt low. In the end it led to me feeling as though I had lost my identity; like I’d forgotten who I was.

The success of Vin Mar!ani, a coca tonic introduced in 1863, encouraged research in the field. Vin Mariani was a comparatively mild product, made by steeping blended coca leaves in Bordeaux wine, but its great popularity underscored the likelihood that the coca alkaloid might have therapeutic applications. The leaves were chewed in a manner consistent with modern use of coffee, chewed for a small burst of energy or stamina.
